St. Patrick's Parade March 13
The 159th annual San Francisco St. Patrick's Day Parade, one of the City's largest, most popular and colorful annual events, will take place this year on Saturday, March 13, at 11:30 a.m.
More than 100 colorful floats, Irish dance troupes and marching bands, including thousands of participants young and old alike, will parade down Market Street to the Civic Center.
The San Francisco parade is the largest Irish event west of the Mississippi, with more than four million people in California having Irish heritage. This year's parade will have former Congressman John Burton as its grand marshal, recognizing the current California Democratic Party chairman for his lifelong commitment to Irish issues.
The St. Patrick's Day Parade celebrates and showcases the Irish community, Irish culture and character in all its forms. In recent years the parade has grown to attract an estimated 200,000 people. Featured groups from throughout the Bay Area's Irish community include schools, youth organizations, labor unions, cultural groups and the San Francisco police and fire departments.
"We have been getting more and more people every year," said Diarmuid Philpott, president of the United Irish Societies of San Francisco. "This year, we hope to get more display and retail booths and more entertainment, especially for the little ones. St. Patrick's Day is a truly family orientated occasion."
The parade starts at 11:30 a.m. at the corner of Market and Second streets. For more information, call the parade hotline at (415) 395-3417.
