Parking Meter Proposals - Your Input Needed

Many residents in the district have called or have written to our office recently about the Municipal Transportation Authority's (MTA) preliminary studies and proposals to expand parking meter hours in various neighborhoods throughout San Francisco.

Just recently, on Oct. 20, the MTA board of directors heard a staff report on these proposals. Many residents and advocates attended the meeting to testify, culminating in several hours of public comment. Although action was not taken at that time to implement the proposals, I highly encourage you to voice your thoughts on this issue before any final decisions are made by the MTA board.

While changes in meter policy may be received differently depending on the area, I believe that the MTA should be more surgical in their approach. Not only should the MTA take a look at circulation/congestion on a neighborhood by neighborhood level, but it must also take a look and assess how the economy has impacted various areas before implementing any changes.

In the neighborhood commercial areas that I represent, I hear from many merchants about how increased meter hours could impact their businesses adversely. It would be important to let the MTA board of directors know how a meter expansion will personally affect you.

The MTA Board can be reached via e-mail at MTABoard@SFMTA.com.

Improvements to Taraval Corridor

During the last budget process, our office was successful in advocating for funding to improve our merchant corridors. We recently brought Woody LaBounty on board as the Taraval Commercial Corridor Manager to partner with the City as the community organizer for Taraval Street, and look forward to working with him to revitalize this commercial corridor. Over the next year, Woody will be working with residents, merchants and the City to create a more vibrant, livable street for everyone. For more on Woody and his work, please visit www.outsidelands.org. Please contact Woody if you have ideas and enthusiasm to help at woody@outsidelands.org.
