Capt. Paul Chignell: Police Beat

Robberies Spike in District
In recent weeks we have seen a spike from time to time in street robberies in certain areas of the Taraval Police District.

Robbery is an extremely serious crime which occurs spontaneously in most cases by opportunistic thieves who sometimes use guns or knives but often resort to extreme force to take property from a victim. Robbery is defined by the California Penal Code as an act where property is taken through force or fear. The California Legislature has passed laws mandating stiff sentences for adults who commit robberies.

It is important for residents to exercise good crime prevention to avert robberies. The most important factor in prevention is to exercise common sense. Going out late at night in dark areas is obviously not a good policy. Travelling on foot at night should be done in well-lit areas and ideally in the company of others. Always be aware of your surroundings and do not venture in places where you feel uncomfortable.

If you feel you are being followed, go into commercial areas or enter open establishments. Do not allow yourself to be alone in areas where you cannot summon assistance. Simple things like carrying a whistle and using it if you feel threatened can often dissuade a robber.

Remember that almost all criminals are opportunists - they will quickly go to another target if they feel that a victim is not readily available for attack - so minimize their opportunity.

Recently, we have had a rash of armed robberies by three young suspects in the Parkmerced area. The suspects have been striking late at night, close to midnight and pick out victims that appear to be unaware of what is happening around them.

The San Francisco State University Police and Taraval officers have been saturating the area in plainclothes and in uniform to abate these robberies, and hopefully to capture those responsible. Simple tips from residents often lead to an arrest so call us if you see people loitering or acting suspiciously. We need your help, as you are often our eyes and ears.
